Student Body

Student Body by Frank Winters was first produced in 2015 and opened at the Flea Theatre in New York, New York. The Flea is known for its productions of new works. Some experimental plays and workshops are produced in their black box. Before its production at the Flea, it was commissioned by The Strasberg Institute for a group of young actors and was set in high school. It was then adapted into a college edition. Both editions are performed in schools all across the country.

This play poses a moral question. A group of young college students gather in the messy scene shop of an unnamed small-town university. One of the girls has brought a video camera filled with pictures from a recent party and one concerning video that looks like it might be rape. The cast debates what to do with this information and leaves the audience with more questions than answers. Student Body was written during a time of rising discourse about sexual harassment and unbalanced power dynamics spurred on by the Me-Too movement. This play asks the audience to put themselves in the shoes of the different characters and challenges them to engage with a topic that is too often hushed and silenced.
