Dramaturgical Casebook by Hannah Embree
Lobby Display
I wanted to create an immersive lobby display that communicated information that would provide important context and insight into the play. The mezzanine of Mitchell Theatre is up a flight of stairs. It wraps around in a long l curve and has two entrances to the theatre and both a coat room and a concessions stand. I chose to wrap my display all throughout the space so that audience members could walk through a stylized "town of Maycomb". My previous work in props and basic theatrical design helped me to build a space that was in line with our set design and fit my vision for what the space could be.
We sold out almost every performance and the audiences would crowd around the various displays. It was moving to see people getting up close or crouching down to read things. They would buy a snack and sit down in my scrappy "Dill's Movie Theatre" and watch a movie Dill references in the book.
This lobby was my primary dramaturgical artifact.
